Men, It’s Time to Borrow From the Girls (Don’t Worry You’ll Still Look Masculine)

Women are familiar with “Borrowing from the boys” when it comes to style. We’ve got “boyfriend jeans”, “boyfriend blazers”, and oversized menswear inspired shirts. In the age of defying gender norms, it’s now becoming more mainstream for guys to borrow from the girls (about time!). Men, especially heterosexual men, often complain there’s not a lot of options for them when it comes to fashion, but in reality, they may just need to expand their view. So, men– here’s how to incorporate “traditional womenswear” into your wardrobe in an effort to take your style to the next level. WAIT. Don’t click out of this post just yet! Keep an open mind… I promise you’ll still look masculine. 1. Grandma’s Shawl Yes, the model looks like he’s wearing a blanket he grabbed from the couch or perhaps his grandmother’s shawl. BUT, doesn’t he look good? Well, I mean the outfit. The look reads as fashion forward. What makes it particular successful is the monochromatic element. Imagine him without the shawl. Eh… Now with he shawl? FIRE 🔥 …

Check Out This Perfect Gym Bag Made From Plastic Bottles

Research shows that millennials are willing to spend more money on a product that lasts and is sustainable, than just go for the cheapest option. I love that our generation is conscious. From the Women’s March this past weekend, to the Dakota Access Pipeline Protests, we are proving to marketing companies and entrepreneurs that what we purchase must have meaning behind it. We want to change the world. Hamilton Perkins Collection is a new accessory line that is doing it right. Made out of 100% recyclable plastic bottles, HPC sells the world’s first impactful and transparent “Earth” bags.  Billions of plastic bottles are thrown away each year. The average person throws away as much as 180 pounds of plastic in 365 days. It takes 500-1,000 years for plastic to degrade. HPC is addressing these issues by turning trash into fashion. Besides being socially conscious, the bags are also moderately priced. The one featured here is only $97, the price of a standard backpack, yet it’s more durable and has a lesser impact on the environment. The bags are lined with repurposed billboard …

Nia’s Complete Style Makeover

As most of you know I am a fashion stylist as well as a blogger. I just posted my latest style makeover with my client, Nia, on my Styling Portfolio website. I figured, I’d show you the process here as well.  Name: Nia B. Age: 26 Occupation: Director of External Relations Step 1: The Consultation // Find out the need for a stylist, get sizing & fit preference, take style quiz, examine budget. Mainly looking for business attire since it’s mandatory in her office. Doesn’t want to wear a bland white shirt and jacket everyday. Style Star of the Week: Toluwalade Toyin-Kehinde

Name: Toluwalade Toyin-Kehinde Age: 20-something From: Lagos, Nigeria Occupation: Medical student at Emilio Aguinaldo University in the Philippines My style is always evolving but currently I’ll say it’s Comfortable, Simple and Chic. I try to add an edgy piece in every outfit for a nice twist. If I were given $150 to shop, I’m definitely spreading it on various things versus one item. Lol $150 don’t come everyday. Not everything that is expensive is actually stylish. Most times it’s the name you’re paying for. My dream job? Sleep and Chill and still make money haha. But really why can’t that be possible?? Spare time is a luxury to me (medical school doesn’t give spare times) so I usually catch up on lost sleep, shoot for the blog and just relax. Something most people don’t know about me is that I’m way tiny in real life compared to how I look in pictures. My mantra is: “Do your best and leave the rest for God” I recently released a DIY blog critique e-book which guides bloggers in easy steps to improve their blog …

Head Wraps + Hijabs

When E-Shakti asked me to review another item of clothing, I selected this top. While I am not a huge fan of red, I couldn’t help but fall in love with that criss-cross neckline, the length, and cut of this piece. The sleeves with a thumb hole detail are also a plus in this cold weather. I wanted to pair the bold red with my headscarf that has a similar color in it, but to keep it from looking too matchy-matchy, I broke it up with a baby pink bomber. During my internship in NYC I met fellow intern, Maria Alia. I found out she is a fashion blogger as well, and we agreed to get together and take photos of one another. Here’s us together. What you don’t see if the camera awkwardly placed on a USPS Postal Mail Box. What I love most about this look are these glasses from Aspire Eyewear. They pull everything together and give me a quirky edge that I try to aim for in most of my outfits. …

These Are the Black Fashion Stylists You Should Know About

Fashion styling is something I knew I wanted to do as a career since I was 13 years old. Ever since then, I’ve made decisions (starting this blog, going to fashion design school, styling my friends, creating my own company, interning, etc.) to set me up for success in this industry. Since I’ve been living in New York City, and working at a PR firm, I see stylists come in the showroom to pull several times a week. I’m also the one who gets cc-ed on their emails with the account executives and am asked to pull the looks they requested to pack and send to them for use. When I come across an African American stylist, I feel joyous seeing someone who looks like me doing exactly what I want to be doing. So this post is for those of you who need that encouragement. Obviously you don’t have to be black to enjoy this. If you want to be a stylist, or are even remotely interested in fashion, this will be a great …

I Love a Good Print

I found this shirt at a thrift store a while ago. It has become a wild card in my wardrobe. You know: those pieces that you put on every now and then when you want to make a statement and shake things up. In the past I’ve worn it in a way that you could only see a peek of the print, but this time I wanted to wear it full force– in all its glory! As you already know from the last outfit post I wrote, I am always in my adidas track pants. So this shouldn’t be a surprise. The shirt is so loose and comfortable, that I wanted to keep the whole look that way. I am a sucker for a good contradiction though… so I couldn’t let myself get too comfy. My choice to wear this wide brim hat versus a baseball cap, keeps the look stylish. I think my makeup and jewelry do the same thing. It keeps me from looking like I am just wearing Pajamas. Style Star of the Week: Iyesha Jalloh

This week’s style star is a young woman I go to school with. We hang with a similar crowd, so I see her occasionally at different campus events. She may be petite, but her style packs a punch! Better yet, she’s driven, intelligent, and has a good head on her shoulders– and that will never be out of season. Keep reading and you’ll see exactly what I mean. Meet Iyesha… Iyesha Jalloh Sierra Leone born, Columbus, Ohio raised Accounting Student My personal style is a play on classic,  timeless pieces paired up with fun accessories and urban touches of chic. Crisp whites, pretty nudes, aquas and pastels will always find their way into my closet. I’ve always been obsessed with Nicole Richie’s style. My style inspos would definitely have to be a mix of Nicole richie, Kourtney Kardashian and Sex in the City’s, Carrie Bradshaw. My dream job would probably be a role in which I could consult individuals in the areas of style, spirituality and finance. Interesting combination huh? Well, I’m passionate about all 3 …

Beyond Clothes: The Things That Influence Your Style You Probably Didn’t Know

Many of us assume that clothes are the only things that influence and define our styles. The truth is, style is something that gets defined outside of clothing fashion. Each of us has our own unique tastes and styles in life. Style goes far beyond the clothes we wear. And it’s something that helps us to forge our personal identities. Have you ever wondered what influences our unique styles? And are they things that have done so overnight, or have we always had a particular style? Photo Credit The Weather Where You Live It might sound strange, but the climate where you live plays a big part in your personal style. That’s because you have to dress in climate-appropriate attire a lot of the time! As you can imagine, someone that likes to dress in stylish clothes won’t wear boring clothes. Even if they live somewhere cold like northern Alaska! The Work You Do What you do for a living will define your style. For example, let’s say that you have an outdoors job. It’s …
