These Are the Black Fashion Stylists You Should Know About

Fashion styling is something I knew I wanted to do as a career since I was 13 years old. Ever since then, I’ve made decisions (starting this blog, going to fashion design school, styling my friends, creating my own company, interning, etc.) to set me up for success in this industry. Since I’ve been living in New York City, and working at a PR firm, I see stylists come in the showroom to pull several times a week. I’m also the one who gets cc-ed on their emails with the account executives and am asked to pull the looks they requested to pack and send to them for use. When I come across an African American stylist, I feel joyous seeing someone who looks like me doing exactly what I want to be doing. So this post is for those of you who need that encouragement. Obviously you don’t have to be black to enjoy this. If you want to be a stylist, or are even remotely interested in fashion, this will be a great …

I Bet You I Can Find a Hundred Different Ways to Wear Adidas Track Pants

If I had to wear one pair of pants for the rest of my life, it would be these. I honestly think I could come up with a hundred different ways to wear Adidas Track Pants. I received these for Christmas last year, and haven’t been able to take them off since. They’re just so versatile! As we’re now approaching winter, it’s not advised to go bare legged, so I thought my track pants would make the perfect addition to this outfit (a floral printed dress with a sweater thrown on top). While one’s first instinct may be to wear tights instead, I think this is much more unexpected, and exciting. One of the employees where I intern actually complimented me when I wore this to the office. He said, “You look so cool today!” It felt good that he called me out on it. I felt cool! Haha. Try this: Put together an outfit like you normally would, but then at the last minute substitute whatever you’re wearing on bottom with track pants. Or, …

Closet Barcode

A few weeks ago I styled a shoot for my friend, Mandee’s magazine. I decided to incorporate some new handbags I received in the mail from Closet Barcode. The vibrant bags fit in perfectly with the aesthetic of the shoot. I don’t want to give too much away about it now (a separate blog post is coming soon where I’ll go into detail about my inspiration, how I styled the shoot, where the clothes are from, etc.). Now that the photoshoot is over, I wear the bags for everyday. My favorite of the two is the purple colorblock tote. It’s incredibly spacious (fits my 17in macbook), has lots of compartments, and can be worn many ways. I can use the included strap for an over the shoulder look, or carry it like a tote. Also, the red accent can be taken out and worn as a clutch, or used as a pencil case. Click HERE to shop Closet Barcode.

Top FAQ’s I Get About Modeling

I’ve been modeling professionally since I was 16 and have had some great opportunities including being on the cover of a magazine. I really enjoy being in front of the camera, and I love fashion, so I’m always doing photo shoots. Due to this, many of my friends, classmates, and just random people from the internet/social media will ask me for tips on modeling. Below are the top 10 questions I get asked. If you’re interested in modeling maybe this will help you! If not, feel free to share this with anyone you may know who is. I’m 5’1″ can I still model? Yes. There’s lots of different types of modeling. While runway may not be a practical option for you, print modeling is more lax on height requirements. Same goes with modeling for commercials, or even promo modeling. What do I wear to a casting call? A fitted t-shirt or tank top (preferably in black, white, or grey), skinny jeans, little-to-no makeup, and a pair of heels you’re comfortable walking in. Your hair should …

My Modeling Portfolio + My Thoughts on the Industry

I created a website with my most recent modeling work. This is something I should’ve done a while ago. I have an online portfolio website for my school projects (I am a fashion design major), as well as my fashion styling work. So, it just made sense to have one for modeling as well. I recently quit the agency I was a part of because they weren’t doing anything for me. When I first moved to Cincinnati that was one of the things I immediately wanted to do was sign with an agency. I made the mistake of going with the first one I interviewed with, instead of thoroughly doing my research and asking around. They convinced me to pay for a portfolio through their website, which is why I never had my own. Meanwhile, I went out and got my own work, which was often unpaid, but at least I was building my portfolio. The agency called me a total of two times with a possible gig, but neither one of them worked out. …
