Why I, An Instagram Fanatic, Deleted All Social Media For a Week + What It Revealed to Me

On Sunday November 5, I did something I never thought I’d do: I deleted all of my social media apps from my phone (and had enough discipline not to look at the web versions). I decided that I would go on a week long social media cleanse. SNAPCHAT TWITTER FACEBOOK MESSENGER FACEBOOK INSTAGRAM Snapchat hurt the least (I use IG stories 99% of the time), and Instagram the most, but I felt like I needed to disconnect.  Keep reading to find out WHY I did it, WHAT it taught me, and HOW it changed my perspective. I, along with many other millennials, was guilty of scrolling through feeds and stories morning through night. It was just a gut reaction. Waiting in line? Open Instagram. Waiting for a browser to load on my computer? Let’s see what’s happening on Facebook. Most of what I was consuming was irrelevant or unhealthy information. My mind was cluttered with memes and gifs, celebrity gossip, stranger’s vacation photos, facebook memories with my ex, rants, etc. Yet somehow I’d been conditioned to …

My Secrets to Self-Care + Relaxation in the Midst of Chaos

I try not to use the phrase “I am stressed” when I am feeling like there’s too much going on and I can’t grasp control of it. Instead, I choose to say “I am feeling overwhelmed.” The difference is the first is claiming an identity, while the second is labeling a temporary experience. Feeling overwhelmed seems less permanent than stress, or at least in my mind it does. My point is our minds have power. Our thoughts have influence. We should be careful what we speak into the world, because we can manifest our own troubles unintentionally. Maybe you can think of a different word that works for you, either way, we all deal with feeling overextended. Here are some of my secrets to staying calm despite it. Create Ambience  My room is my sanctuary. When I’m feeling overwhelmed it tends to be a mess. So the first thing I do is clean and declutter and then follow with lighting my favorite candles. Get Cozy  If I am wearing denim, or something stiff, I immediately …

30 Day Fitness Challenge + Fun Workout Leggings

Photography By Amie Santavicaa  Is it just me or do you also have trouble working out consistently? When I give into my urge to run, I keep it up for about a week or two, and then I am back on hiatus for a month. Then of course my body is all sore after working out again, because it’s not used to working certain muscles. So I get all motivated and decide to push through the pain only to repeat the cycle all over again. I admire those who dedicate themselves to an everyday or even several-days-a-week exercise regimen, but I haven’t had much success with that since my days of running track in high school. Recently I came across a 30 day ab challenge on my Facebook timeline. I made a mental note to try that “someday” and kept scrolling, but a week later, I was still thinking about it. So I printed it out, and I’ve been diligently staying on course for a week now. It starts off in small increments of a …

Why I am No Longer Obsessing Over My Follower Count on Instagram and Why You Shouldn’t Either

This past Sunday’s church sermon has really stuck with me. The message was about what happens when we compare ourselves to others, and how we should be focused on how God made us. He painstakingly knit you and I to be unique individuals, unlike anybody else. So we should find solace in that. The pastor went on to compare a dump truck and a Ferrari. Both are vehicles, but one is meant to carry a large amount of items, and the other to drive fast. The dump truck isn’t wishing to be a Ferrari and the Ferrari isn’t wishing to be the dump truck. Although the two have similarities, they were specially designed for their own purpose. The same is true for us believers. We shouldn’t occupy ourselves with someone else’s assignment, but instead stay focused on our own. God doesn’t compare what he creates.  The next thing the pastor said is what made it all click for me: “Redefine success. Are you applauding things that Jesus isn’t?” On judgement day I am pretty sure …

Need to Relax? This Might Help

Iconic American lifestyle brand Vera Bradley has 33 years of successful pattern development under its belt. While most known for her bags, clothing, and accessories, the Fort Wayne fashion brand has unveiled something new: coloring books! I am sure you’ve heard about the recent adult coloring book craze, but did you know the health benefits of it? Research shows  coloring has therapeutic potential to reduce anxiety, create focus or bring about more mindfulness. Groundbreaking research dating all the way back to 2005 (can you believe that was 12 years ago?) proved anxiety levels dropped when subjects colored mandalas: round frames with geometric patterns inside. Although, simply doodling, had no effect in reducing the other subjects’ stress levels.   I’ve had a chance to review Vera Bradley Floral Patterns Coloring Book and Vera Bradley Paisley Patterns Coloring Book, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. I am in the midst of what my school calls “Hell Week.” It’s the week before finals (because unlike the rest of the university, in art school we don’t have final exams, we have huge projects due and presentations). …

Here Are the Strange Differences I Encountered While In Morocco

So it’s been two weeks now that I’ve been back from my study abroad/service learning trip to Morocco. I went with a group of 15 University of Cincinnati students, and our faculty leader who quickly became our second mom. I didn’t know the majority of the people who went beforehand, but after spending 10 days and nights together, bonding with real human connection for the 23 hours a day we didn’t have wifi, teaching English to kids whose native tongue was Arabic, and experiencing a different culture together, I have an undeniable bond with each of them. When you travel to an unfamiliar place, there are things that stand out and may seem strange from your usual day-to-day experiences. In my temporary, exciting new world, I was overstimulated with newness, and tried to keep track in the notes app of my phone everything I was experiencing. Here are the most memorable observations… Public Bathrooms  It’s the afternoon, and everyone’s knocked out. We were on a bus on our way to our hotel in Marrakech after …

This is The Accessory Your Laptop Is Missing

I recently got the newest MacBook Pro with the Touchbar and I’ve been trying to find a great laptop sleeve to protect it. My previous computer was the 2011, 17-inch MacBook Pro and it decided to quit on me while I was living in New York (leaving me without a computer for a month, might I add). Anywho, I promised myself I’d take great care of this computer. I use my dust cloth everyday to wipe away smears on the screen, I don’t eat around it, and I didn’t just want to throw it in my backpack like I had done with the last laptop. With all of this special care, I needed a sleeve that was of high quality, functional, but also aesthetically pleasing. Here’s what I found… The sleeve is from the e-commerce site, Mujjo which is based in the Netherlands. They combine full grain vegetable-tanned leather and felt, offering padding comfort for my Macbook. The leather fold-over closure – with one snap button on the right – provides a simple closure and …

An Evening of Black Achievement

In less than 3 weeks (ohmigod time flies) I am going to Morocco, Africa for a week-long study abroad trip through my school. We will be going into two schools to teach English, as well as exploring the cultural landscape. I’ve never studied abroad before, but it’s been one of my goals before I graduate. Part of the reason is because I’ve been told the University can significantly aid my expenses, and once I am out in the real world, I won’t have access to that kind of financial support. Once I found out I was accepted to be one of the 15 to go on the trip, I felt so blessed! I sought the advice of my friends who had studied abroad before, and began applying for scholarships and writing proposals. One scholarship in particular was being rewarded by the African American Alumni Association. In an essay prompt applicants had to reply to the Maya Angelou quote: “Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce …

Happiness is a Choice + 5 More Lessons I Learned While Living in New York City

I am back home in Ohio now, after living in New York City for a 4 month internship at a fashion PR company [Read More About It Here]. When I left home, I was ready. I felt confident, and was eager to start a journey being completely independent and “free,” while also taking the next step in my career. Little did I know this experience was about to be the best and most difficult thing I’ve endured yet. I figured I’d do a little recap and share with you the lessons I learned while living in New York. Lesson 1 | Your True Friends Aren’t Always Going to Be The First People You Meet  One of my goals coming into this city was to make an effort to make friends. As an introvert, this isn’t the easiest of tasks for me. That’s why after a week of living in my all girls-dorm-style-apartment, I was elated to meet a group of women who accepted me into their circle. From that point on we ate every meal together, and …
