Style Star of the Week: Hadiatu Jalloh

Hadiatu Jalloh Age 20 From Boston, MA (currently living in Chicago) Student I’d say my style is relaxed but put together. Comfort is paramount in anything I wear but I do enjoy planning my outfits out. I don’t think I’d be able to put my style into one category even if I tried because I love switching things up on a day-to-day basis. One day I’ll be in flowy clothing, pretty Boho, and the next day I’m wearing my Timb’s, a thrifted windbreaker and a baseball cap. I love the freedom I have to dress however I’m feeling that day. My style inspiration? Solange! I love seeing the freedom in her expression. Her bold pattern and texture mixing truly speaks to me. I hope to one day ascend to her level of boldness (grey is the most prevalent color in my wardrobe right now). Growing up I adored Lisa Bonet’s style and feel she truly inspired me to start dressing the way I do. I’d love to work in the music industry. A&R preferably, finding …

Style Star of the Week: Chukwudi ‘Chuks’ Nwamba

Chukwudi ‘Chuks’ Nwamba 24 Years Old Southfield, MI Industrial Engineer I’d like to think of my style as simple, clean, comfortable and timeless; modern dressy/casual. Comfort and versatility is what I keep in mind most when I get dressed or purchase apparel. I always appreciate subtle but bold complimentary accessories as well: scarves, vintage rings, sock patterns, watches, etc. I love representing my culture through what I wear. My style is inspired by my close friends, Kanye West, my culture (I’m Nigerian) and of course random pages I follow on instagram. I recently began a business with some of my closest friends known as Jerk X Jollof.  We provide an experience that exposes communities to African & Caribbean culture, cuisine, and nightlife. It was inspired by a void in spaces that allow people to come together and celebrate the diaspora. Jerk comes from caribbean jerk chicken, Jollof comes from an african rice known as jollof rice. My dream job would consist of being able to travel the world turning the business into an organization that curates …

Style Star of the Week: Iyesha Jalloh

This week’s style star is a young woman I go to school with. We hang with a similar crowd, so I see her occasionally at different campus events. She may be petite, but her style packs a punch! Better yet, she’s driven, intelligent, and has a good head on her shoulders– and that will never be out of season. Keep reading and you’ll see exactly what I mean. Meet Iyesha… Iyesha Jalloh Sierra Leone born, Columbus, Ohio raised Accounting Student My personal style is a play on classic,  timeless pieces paired up with fun accessories and urban touches of chic. Crisp whites, pretty nudes, aquas and pastels will always find their way into my closet. I’ve always been obsessed with Nicole Richie’s style. My style inspos would definitely have to be a mix of Nicole richie, Kourtney Kardashian and Sex in the City’s, Carrie Bradshaw. My dream job would probably be a role in which I could consult individuals in the areas of style, spirituality and finance. Interesting combination huh? Well, I’m passionate about all 3 …

Style Star of The Week: Elizabeth Hall

When I first started this blog back in 2011, I regularly featured people I came across online who had great style. You may remember this as my “Street Style” series. Welp, I’m bringing it back and with a new name: Style Stars. These are people I stumble upon on Instagram, could be fellow bloggers, or even acquaintances I actually know. Today it’s Elizabeth Hall whom I met at BPCM, where we are both interns. I’ve always noticed she has a great way of layering, mismatching jewelry, pairing funky socks with bold shoes, etc. She sticks out in a sea of thigh high boots and culottes. In a word, Elizabeth’s looks are quirky. But I’ll you decide for yourself. Elizabeth Ella Hall 20 Years Old Waverly, Nebraska Fashion Student My style is a mix of edgy, vintage, eclectic and a little bohemian. Probably just depends on the day. I also like it to be really messy. I like when an outfit looks really cool, but also just thrown together at the last minute, when in reality …

The Best of London Fashion Week S/S 17 Street Style

When people ask me, “Where do you get your style inspiration from?” I often say: “The street!” Street style has really taken over our culture. What’s being worn to the shows during fashion week, is just as important as the clothes being shown on the runway. Here are my top picks from London Fashion Week Spring 2017. If I had to describe the images below in one word, I would choose “cheeky.” From the book held as a clutch, to the lettermen jackets, and handpainted word art… one thing is certain: fashion is meant to be fun! Layering Tricks to Ditch the Winter Slump

When deciding what to wear when the weather turns chilly, my first thoughts usually go straight to oversized sweaters. While an oversized sweater or two is great, wearing them for a whole season can get boring, and there are so many other options. The key to getting through chilly winters is often layering, so instead of throwing on your usual slouchy cardigan, try out some of these winter layering tips to freshen up your cold-weather look. Layer your Vest Over your Jacket Show off a fun and fluffy faux fur vest by layering it over your regular jacket. Match up your hemlines lengths  to keep it looking chic. Winter Midi Skirts Pull out your favorite spring midi skirt and pair it with tights and some knee-high boots for winter. If it’s especially cold, you even layer leggings under the skirt. Throw a simple sweater on top like Victoria Beckham to finish up the look. 3/4 Length Sleeves Keep all of your 3/4 sleeve jackets in rotation by layering a long sleeve shirt underneath. It also provides a great …

The Look For Less// Gigi Hadid

Gigi Hadid is only 20 years old and already rocking the limelight. You may recognize her from Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood girl squad or as Kendall Jenner’s BFF. You may even recognize her from the new Calvin Harris music video, ‘How Deep Is Your Love’. She is a full-time model and has a unique style that has landed her on many pages and covers of popular magazines. Her career is taking off and many are taking notice of her “model off-duty” style. Here are a few of my favorite looks from Gigi Hadid and how to get them for less: On October 1st, 2015 Gigi wore this casual but stylish look to a Chanel fitting in Paris. Although she wore a $25 dress (which sold out the same day she wore it), to buy her ENTIRE outfit, it would cost you around $927.66. Here is how to get her look for $134!   Find the Forever 21 Dress Here! Cotton On Dress no longer available.   Get ASOS Sunglasses Here! Get St.Louis Sunglasses Here! Get Forever 21 Bag Here! What to Wear This Week Inspired by NYFW Street Style

So part one of fashion month is over and we were treated to being able to see the new runway trends and collections for Spring 2016. We were also left with TONS of inspirational street style pics from NYFW. Below are some of the most wearable looks that you can try out this week! Let me know which is your favorite. Monday Start your week off right with a bold printed pant to waken you up. A white button down adds balance. Tuesday Pull out those overalls! Give them a cuff, and wear with combat boots and a printed top for a more grown-up take on this staple trend. Wednesday  Wear jeans under your dress, because: why not? I love how soft and floaty this looks, very boho. Be sure to pay attention to proportion. Thursday  As we begin to transition into fall, jackets are a must. Try an army inspired jacket with a mini dress. Don’t forget your lipstick! Friday It’s Fridaayyyy, Fridayyyyy! This is your day to be as casual as you wanna …

AFROPUNK

I love everything that Afropunk stands for. Art. Culture. Music. Justice. Freedom. Creativity. Individuality. I could go on and on. August 22 and 23rd the Afropunk fest was held in NYC (The line up included Lauryn Hill, Grace Jones, Lenny Kravitz, Kelis, and Danny Brown just to name a few). The following street style images are from then. Afropunk is also being held in Atlanta October 3rd and 4th (my birthday weekend!), I hope by the grace of God I can go. I so want to be immersed in this community. “Originating with the 2003 documentary that highlighted a Black presence in the American punk scene, it is a platform for the alternative and experimental. Remaining at the core of its mission are the punk principles of DIY aesthetics, radical thought and social non-conformity. AFROPUNK is a voice for the unwritten, unwelcome and unheard-of, redefining the urban experience.” – Afropunk.com  Now check out all of this MELANIN. I love everything that Afropunk stands for. Art. Culture. Music. Justice. Freedom. Creativity. Individuality. I could go on …

A Call for Pink

I have never considered myself to be a “pink” girl. You know what I mean. The girls who aspire to drive around in bright pink Porsches like Elle Woods, not to say that I think there is anything wrong with that. From birth, girls are bombarded with baby to pepto-bismol pink. Products made for girls are automatically done in — pink! At such a young age, it seemed to me that pink was assigned to me, which of course meant that I wasn’t much of a fan, and it was just so extremely feminine. I just didn’t see the color as representative of me, or any part of my style. This year I began to see pinks coming into favor on the runway, and with celebrities, Rhianna in particular. Somehow she is able to turn even a frothy salmon ball gown into an edgy statement. Even pastels began to appeal to me. However, I didn’t realize until today, sitting outside of Union Station in Chicago, that the meaning of pink has changed entirely, which is …
