My Natural Hair Journey

So, about 10 months ago I went “natural.” By this I mean I stopped getting relaxers, which are the harsh chemicals many African Americans currently (or have in the past) put in their hair to permanently straighten it. If you’ve ever seen the movie “Good Hair” with Chris Rock, you’d know that the “creamy crack” is very damaging and unhealthy for the scalp. Unfortunately, society (since slave times) tells African American women straighter hair looks better, and is more beautiful. Our naturally kinky, curly hair is often deemed “inappropriate for the work place” or “too unruly.” Today, more and more women are laying off the relaxers and are beginning to embrace what God gave them. I decided to do the same and it’s soooo freeing! Me with relaxed hair It’s been two weeks since I did THE BIG CHOP. This is when women decide to cut off all of their relaxed hair and just rock the naturally curly hair growing from their scalp, that is chemical free. In between the time I first stopped getting …

While black certainly isn’t for everyone, you can dip your toes into the trend by trying a dark brown, or even a dark plum. Pair the lipstick with very clean makeup. Simply add a coat of clear brow mascara, a light foundation, a brown mascara, and maybe a light eyeshadow for more drama. Pair this look with effortless hair in beachy waves or an undone bun. Headbands Abound at Couture Fashion Week

Couture Fashion Week is a prime example of fashion as art. Exquisitely detailed and luxurious pieces are precisely sent down the runway to the awe of the few allowed to witness the shows. While only 1% of people are able to take part in the full couture experience, we can certainly take inspiration from the beautiful ideas presented there. One of the foremost accessory trends was the headband, especially in metallics. Below I have reviewed and highlighted four of the shows that did headbands best, and all differently. You can find accessible under $25 options below to bring these couture visions into your life. Valentino Couture My favorite designers did it again for their couture show this season. The collection perfectly exemplified luxury, elegance, and opulence. The show took place in Rome, which seemed to very well portray their inspiration, each girl looked like she stepped out of an ancient royal portrait. Influences from Imperial, Byzantine, and Medieval Rome can be seen in many aspects of the looks, but especially in the fabrics. Their use …

VIDEO: Let’s Ombre

Hey guys! So during spring break I cut off around seven or eight inches of hair, and in the last few months I had been waiting to ombre my hair. Well hair has reached a long enough length, so I decided to pounce on this opportunity to dye it. I made a little vlog for anyone who’s thinking of ombring their hair or just dying it. Dying hair uses the same basic steps as ombring, so you can use the same guidance I give in this vlog.

5 Simple Back To School Hairstyles

Heading off to college soon or getting ready to go back to school? Sure you’ve got the basics covered… you know what to bring, and now you even know what overlooked items to bring, but once you’re on campus and mom and dad have driven off into the proverbial sunset, you my friend are on your own. When you’re running all over campus trying to make it to your next class you want to make sure everything from your outfit to your hair is cute. Often times in college it’s so easy to fall into the ponytail slump and just brush your hair back and go. But if you try these awesome and easy hairstyles, I promise you will be turning heads everywhere you go. 1. The Top Knot– I recently read an article that said the top knot is going out of style. I say don’t believe the hype. The top knot will literally save your life in college. It’s such a versatile hair style. Not only is it casual enough for Lit 101, but it’s …

2 DIY Hairstyles Perfect for Valentine’s Day

The following looks are from Sasha Coefield’s (creator of the popular beauty and fashion YouTube Channel AskSash88) new book where she shares her braiding secrets in DIY Braids: From Crowns to Fishtails, Easy, Step-by-Step Hair BraidingInstructions (Adams Media, December 2013). Coefield features a ton of great hairstyles that are really easy to achieve (I learned how to create my first fishtail braid from the book!).  Here are two of my favorite styles that would be great for Valentine’s Day! 1. Dutch Braided Spiral  Step 1: Divide the hair at the front of your head into three sections. Make sure to use medium-size sections when braiding since his hairstyle looks best with a bigger chunkier braid. Step 2: Start Dutch Braiding by taking the section of hair on the right and putting it under the middle section. Then take the section on the left and cross it underneath the section in the middle. As you continue braiding towards the back of your head, make sure to add new sections of hair to both your left and right strands. Step 3: After all hair has …

It’s All About Balance: A 30-Second Style Tip

Next time you’re getting dressed, keep this simple style tip in mind: the more time you spend getting dressed, the less you should fuss over your hair. On the contrary, the more casual the outfit, the more time you should spend on your hair. It’s all about balance. Some easy hair styles could include: A messy bun, a quick ponytail, or a side braid. With a simple jeans and t-shirt, try adding pretty braids throughout your bun (and make the bun neater than a messy one would be), wrap a few strands of hair around your elastic after you’ve put your hair in a ponytail to create the illusion of your hair as the ponytail holder, or straighten/curl your hair to perfection  and leave it down. I try to do this as often as possible. When I’m feeling like really dressing up for school, a quick messy bun makes it look like I’m not trying too hard. But, by taking my time on my hair, when I’m just wearing my basics, it gives off the vibe …

Holiday Hairdos? Mission Accomplished.

I have a secret confession to make: I don’t like to style my hair the same way two days in a row.  There, I said it.  My hair-do mission has been declassified. The issue is that, perhaps unlike other women, I treat my hair like I treat my accessories.  Certainly I can’t wear my treasured gold-sequined stilettos with $10 leggings.  Similarly, I can’t rock my hair in a messy sideways ponytail with the fancy black lace dress I plan on wearing to my company’s holiday party.  It’s just not gonna happen. This is why I store a multitude of hair-do weapons in my arsenal, especially when holiday season comes around.  This year, I plan on exposing the following styles (appropriately assigned to specific battlegrounds). Battle: Holiday Happy Hour My friends never cease to find an event worth celebrating with a happy hour.  As I’m sipping on some candy cane martinis or Christmas ale, I hope to be looking friendly and cute.  So, to give in to the trend of the year, I recommend a braided …
