Night at the Museum

After work on Friday last week, my friend Neha and I decided to take a trip to MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art. Neither one of us has been yet since we’ve moved to New York, and since it’s free on Friday’s we figured it was the opportune time.             I paired a black and white striped dress from Style Room 326 with a denim jacket I found at a thrift store, and my slip on sneakers from Payless. For my accessories I chose to put my hair up with a silk scarf I bought when I went to Australia a few years ago. And of course my outfit wouldn’t be complete without a pair of stud earrings. I don’t feel like myself without them. This particular pair are new. I actually customized them myself on the website, Anjolee. Although this isn’t real diamond jewelry, Anjolee has a great selection of real diamonds. These are a mix of Silver and CZ.   I love the packaging it came in. The …

… A dainty necklace. I’ve been wearing my Amor necklace from LovePendants every single day. It pairs well with anything and everything I wear, which is why I think everyone should have their own version of a dainty necklace. They’re lightweight as opposed to statement necklaces, and have a barely feel there, plus it makes finding accessories to pair well with your outfit very simple. “LovePendants is a newly launched jewelry company by award-winning veteran of the jewelry industry, Robert Leser.  Robert has developed a new, patent-pending technique to engrave semi-precious gemstones with initials, words, icons and other sentiments.” There are even options for customization. I Thought of You // Fair Trade Jewelry

I recently had the opportunity to model for fair trade company, I Thought of You. Artisans in developing countries handmade the jewelry and accessories you see below in partnership with the owner of the company, whose name is Mandy. The pieces are very beautiful and also affordable! As I was trying on each new set of jewelry, Mandy explained to me how it was made. The materials come from flora and fauna found locally in the artisan’s home country. For example, there are necklaces made of pine nuts, as well as orange peels, glass and paper. To read more about the process click here.  Also, be sure to head to the homepage (you’ll find me again!) and look through the newest collection “A Green Getaway.”

New In

1. MagBag  Magbags are the latest new way to travel with your jewelry safely. The magnet liner system holds jewelry in place so it won’t detangle or break. Check out the video below to learn more. I went for the ivory and gold one, and tested it out on my recent trip to Atlanta. Works like a charm! 2. Dsenyo Turquoise Earrings Fair trade company, Dsenyo partners with artisan communities in Malawi, Zambia, and Brazil enabling women to become more economically empowered through the sale of fair trade gifts and ethical fashion. I thought these earrings would add a nice pop of color to my usually neutral outfits. Check out more of their jewelry here. 3. Redbubble Skirt  Redbubble is always coming out with cool new products, and their latest addition has been pencil skirts. I wanted to see what they were all about. I always have a hard time picking what print I want because there are literally thousands of options. Eventually, I settled on this one, an abstract design that resembles a cloudy sky. …

Just Add These: Spring’s Best Accessory Trends 2014

Tip 1: Go Vintage   Whether you’re inspired by the gems in the Downton Abbey collection or if you’re bedazzled by Modcloth’s first vintage-inspired jewelry collection, vintage jewelry is in –or at least vintage-inspired jewelry is in. If you’ve ever been to an antique store and seen ornate settings for gems or peals, sometimes in chunky arrangements, those are the kinds of things that are getting attention this Spring. If you’re attending an evening event or something more formal, pick settings that are more ornate and gem-incrusted. If you’re looking for some great baubles for the office or maybe for a road trip, go with vintage-inspired looks that are more colorful and chunkier. Tip 2: Go Smart Flat loafers –sometimes with tassels- are in. These aren’t your professor’s loafers, however: both of these loafers (featured on Modcloth) show the loafer style as unique and different. Other loafers from Overstock.com and other sites may take a more conservative approach with leather loafers, or leather loafers with fringe or tassels. These are in for Spring, too, but be careful not …

Notes On My Personal Style

Every now and then I like to take a step back and look at how I’ve been dressing over a period of time. We often get so caught up in the day-to-day that we forget the big picture. I created this mood board in an effort to map what my personal style looks like. If I had to choose a couple of words to describe my way of dressing, I’d have to choose “minimalistic” and “feminine.” For whatever reason, I gravitate towards boring colors like black, white and grey. If I’m feeling adventurous I’ll go for a blue or purple. With that in mind, I look for what’s in the details. Yes, I may choose a cream sweater… but did you notice the leather patches on the shoulder? The zipper detailing? The little things make a big difference to me. It keeps the outfit from being boring and instead makes it unexpected. I’m drawn to texture, cut, and pattern but I look to use it in subtle ways. Solange Knowles is a style icon of mine …
