As well as the major fashion shows, there are many other smaller fashion events that take place in cities all over the world. Fashion Week takes place twice a year, when designers show their collections to buyers, the press and the general public during a stunning, star-studded event on the catwalk. Internationally, the press talk about ‘’The Big Four’’, though this is more like five. The world’s leading cities for fashion are Milan, New York, Los Angeles, Paris, and London. Milan Arguably the most famous of them all, Milan Fashion Week is held semi-annually in February/March and September/October. Designers from Milan include Roberto Cavalli and Moschino; Italian fashion brands such as Gucci, Versace, Prada, Valentino and Armani have their headquarters in the city; and Milan is renowned for its upscale fashion district, the quadrilatero della moda and prestigious shopping streets. New York New York is the most populous city in the United States. A global power city, headquarters of the United Nations, New York is a cultural and financial capital of the world. The city is famous for its harbor, the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Broadway, Wall Street, bridges, skyscrapers, parks, and luxury shopping on Fifth Avenue. World-famous designers from New York include Calvin Klein, who revolutionized men’s underwear; Ralph Lauren, designer of Polo fashions and fragrances; Tommy Hilfiger, famous for his iconic American brand; and designer of haute couture wedding gowns Vera Wang. New York Fashion Week is held in February and September each year. Los Angeles Los Angeles, California is famous for sunshine, Hollywood, setting trends and Fashion Week, which takes place in October and February each year. Fashion designers from California include Whitney Port; Jazmin Whitley, creator of clothing brand, Li Cari; accessories designer Otis James; and Alexander Wang. Paris The French capital is the home of the most visited art museums in the world, including the Louvre. Paris is home to some of the largest fashion houses in the world, including Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Cartier. Paris is the capital of haute couture or ‘’high fashion’’, which is exclusive, hand-made, custom-fitted clothes. London The capital of England, London, is a leading global city and famous for World Heritage Sites such as the Tower of London and Westminster Abbey; landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, the Shard and Trafalgar Square. London Fashion Week takes place in February and September. Fashion designers from London include Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney, Gareth Pugh and Christopher Kane. Fashionistas may also want to consider visiting some of the world’s other leading cities for fashion. A tour of the major fashion capitals might include Barcelona, Berlin, Las Vegas, Tokyo, Rome, Singapore, Madrid, or Amsterdam. If you time it right, you may get to attend a show-stopping fashion event as well as indulge in some designer shopping.
